Electric Car Maintenance

EV Mazda Service

If you need EV service, the good news is that electric vehicles have far fewer moving parts than gas-powered cars. This means that EVs usually require less maintenance and are typically less expensive to operate. However, electric cars still have some regular maintenance needs you’ll want to keep in mind.

Battery

The?average EV battery should last 12-15 years. However, there are some qualifiers to be aware of. For one, EVs that frequently operate in extreme temperatures usually experience a decrease in battery life of around 25-30 percent. This shouldn’t be an issue for Mazda EV owners in New Jersey, but if you move to a place like Minnesota or Arizona, keep this in mind.

Another thing to consider is that an EV’s battery will degrade more quickly if it’s frequently charged to full capacity and/or completely depleted of its energy. The good news is that most of today’s EVs have settings to charge to a level less than 100 percent—in fact, Mazda USA suggests charging to a level of 85-90 percent for daily use.

Cooling System

Just like gas cars, EVs need to keep their powertrain components cool to ensure everything continues to work as it should. Some EVs use air to do this, while others use a more traditional liquid coolant. Either way, our service and Mazda parts pros will consistently check the integrity of your car’s cooling system, including the hoses and the requisite fluid/air levels.

Brakes

One of the benefits to buying an electric vehicle at Sansone Mazda is that its brakes will last considerably longer than the brakes in a gas car. This is due to every EV’s regenerative braking function, which allows the motor to slow the vehicle by recovering its kinetic energy. So while EVs still rely on mechanical brakes, they use them more infrequently, which puts less pressure on the brake pads and rotors.
